Why is IntelŪ
involved in education? What does the company do?
Intel
believes that young people are the key to solving global
challenges. A solid math and science foundation coupled with
skills such as critical thinking, collaboration and problem
solving are crucial for their success. That is why we get
directly involved today in education programs, advocacy, and
technology access to enable tomorrow’s innovators.
What kind of
education programs does IntelŪ have?
IntelŪ is
committed to helping teachers, schools, students and
universities succeed with specific programs include the
following:
Teacher
Training
The IntelŪ Teach Program offers teachers proven professional
development supporting 21st-century skills and promotes
student-centered approaches and help teachers engage students in
deeply relevant ways, with appropriate use of technology for
learning, creativity, and communication. It helps teachers to
be more effective educators by training them on how to integrate
technology into their lessons, promoting problem solving,
critical thinking and collaboration skills among their students
and is the largest, most successful program of its kind.
Recognizing
Excellence in Math & Science
The Intel
International Science and Engineering Fair, a program of Society
for Science & the Public, is the world's largest pre-college
science fair competition. Each year, more than 6 million young
scientists from around the world vie to attend and 1,500 are
selected as finalists to share ideas, showcase cutting edge
ideas and compete for over USD 4 million in awards and
scholarships. To judge the projects, more than 1,000 science,
engineering, and industry professionals volunteer at the Intel
ISEF. Intel assumed sponsorship of Intel ISEF in 1996, and in
October 2008 extended its commitment to the program through
2019.
skoool™
The skoool learning and teaching program provides teachers and
students online access to science and mathematics resources and
tools set in an engaging, multimedia environment to help improve
learning.
What makes
Intel’s program so unique?
IntelŪ
Education is unique in its commitment, breadth and depth. Not
only is the company’s USD 100+ million annual financial
commitment one of a kind, but Intel’s approach to education is
based on a personal dedication to improving the world: Intel’s
global education program grew from its employees’ commitment to
local schools; today, it extends to the most senior levels of
leadership – for example, Chairman Craig Barrett has been
committed to furthering education for decades. In addition,
unlike many other corporate programs, IntelŪ has country
education managers around the world – individuals whose
full-time job is to make sure IntelŪ Education programs work and
have real impact in their communities. And of course, IntelŪ
employees continue to volunteer in local schools.
What does
IntelŪ have planned for the next few years?
Intel has
trained more than 6 million teachers in over 50 countries, and
is committed to train millions more.
In October
2008, the Intel Foundation committed to its largest single
investment to date—$120 million for math and science education
for youth around the world. The investment includes continued
sponsorship of the Intel Science Talent Search (Intel STS) and
Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF),
programs of Society for Science & the Public, outreach programs
to interest and excite students and teachers about math and
science, and an online science community that includes mentoring
by science fair alumni.
